Terms of service

Last updated 13 September 2026

These terms govern your use of the Refract browser extension and website, provided by Lumen Digital Holdings Ltd ("Refract", "we", "us"). By installing the extension or creating an account, you agree to these terms.

What Refract is

Refract analyses articles and web content using multiple third-party AI models to assess bias, purpose, factual accuracy, source credibility and funding transparency. It's a tool to support your own judgement, not a replacement for it.

Refract's output is not a verdict

Refract's analysis — including trust scores, claim verifications, and bias ratings — is generated by AI models and is provided for informational purposes only. It can be wrong, incomplete, or reflect the limitations of the underlying models. You should treat every result as a starting point for your own thinking, not a definitive judgement on any publication, author, or claim.

Accounts and credits

You need an account to use Refract. Each analysis consumes credits from your monthly allowance based on your plan. Credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over unless we state otherwise. We may adjust credit costs or plan allowances with reasonable notice.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use Refract to:

Subscriptions and billing

Paid plans are billed monthly via Stripe. You can cancel at any time from your account settings; your plan remains active until the end of the current billing period. We don't offer partial refunds for unused credits within a billing cycle.

Third-party AI providers

Refract relies on Anthropic, OpenAI and Google's AI models to generate its analysis. We aren't responsible for outages, errors, or content generated by these third-party services, though we take reasonable steps to handle their failures gracefully.

No liability for editorial or reputational harm

Refract's scores and claims relate to published content, not to any individual personally. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Lumen Digital Holdings Ltd is not liable for any loss arising from decisions made based on Refract's output, including decisions about what to read, trust, or share.

Changes to the service

We may update, suspend, or discontinue features of Refract at any time. We'll do our best to give notice of any change that materially affects your plan or usage.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
